There are some hidden gems to be found in Arizona casino gaming — casinos that make getting there half the fun. One of the spots most worth discovering for adventurous gamers is the Apache Gold Casino located five miles east of Globe on Highway 70 on the San Carlos Indian Reservation.
The trip takes about two hours from Phoenix if you plan on driving straight through to the casino but you definitely want to include some fun stops and detours along the way. One of the nicest side trips to make is a visit to the Boyce Thompson Arboretum located on Highway 60 near the historic copper mining town of Superior.
The Arboretum features beautiful gardens with more than 3,200 different desert plants, most of which can be seen along the 1.5 mile main trail. In addition to the vast and varied Sonoran Desert gardens, visitors can also admire the Arboretum’s African, South American, Asian and Mediterranean plant collections. (Our personal favorites are the fascinating cactus garden — more than 800 species of cactus! – and the towering eucalyptus forests.) After your garden visit, the next stop is in Globe where you head for Broad Street and the Copper Spike Railroad for your trip to the casino. Yes, you’ll be arriving at the casino by train! Named for the copper mining region served by the railway, the Copper Spike departs Thursdays through Sundays from the original two-story depot built in 1916 and travels to the Apache Gold Casino Resort . The 25-minute excursion follows the same route that once brought travelers to the “Land of the Apache,” nearly 100 years ago as they traveled from New Orleans to Los Angeles. (The train runs until May 3 and is then closed for the summer so hurry if you want to do it this season!)
Once you reach the casino — by car or train — you’ll find more than 600 slot games and video poker machines, Blackjack, keno and bingo. There’s also an 18-hole golf course — the scenic Apache Stronghold Course — plus a 140-room hotel and an RV park.
And, like we said, getting there is half the fun!
